Annual Filings for Nonprofits

Stay compliant and protect your nonprofit's good standing.

Every tax-exempt organization must file something with the IRS each year—even if you didn't receive any donations. Here's a breakdown of the different types of annual filings and how to handle them.

01

e-Postcard

Form 990-N

For nonprofits with gross receipts under $50,000

Takes 5 minutes Free to file No financial statements required

If your nonprofit made under $50,000 for the year, you may qualify for the easiest filing option: the 990-N e-Postcard. It's just a short online form confirming your nonprofit is still active.

How to File Yourself (Free)

  1. 1. Go to the IRS e-Postcard portal
  2. 2. Log in or create an account
  3. 3. Enter your EIN and confirm basic info
  4. 4. Submit! You'll get a confirmation instantly
⚠️

Must be filed every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends (e.g., May 15 if your year ends December 31)

02

Short Form

Form 990-EZ

For nonprofits with gross receipts under $200,000 and assets under $500,000

Form 990-EZ is a shorter version of the full Form 990 but still requires you to report:

Revenue and expenses
Program accomplishments
Officer compensation
Balance sheet items
Public support test

This form can be a bit technical, and most nonprofits choose to work with a bookkeeper or tax professional to make sure it's done right.

03

Full Form

Form 990

For nonprofits with gross receipts over $200,000 or assets over $500,000

The full 990 is a detailed public document and is often reviewed by:

Grant funders
Donors
Journalists
Watchdog sites

You'll need:

Financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, etc.)
Governance disclosures
Program activity summaries
Fundraising details
Public support calculations

We recommend working with a CPA or nonprofit finance expert for this form. It's not just a tax return—it's a transparency tool for your organization.

What Happens If You Don't File?

If you miss three consecutive annual filings (even just the 990-N), the IRS will automatically revoke your nonprofit's tax-exempt status.

Reinstating it can take months and involve a lot of paperwork and fees.
